Sports Medicine

Lameness and soundness evaluations

Therapeutics & Regenerative Medicine

Intra-articular joint injections
Joint injections are used to reduce inflammation and improve comfort and mobility. Treatment plans are tailored to the individual horse and performance demands.

IRAP (Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein)
IRAP is an autologous therapy derived from the horse’s own blood, used to manage joint inflammation and osteoarthritis. The processed serum contains high levels of anti-inflammatory proteins that block interleukin-1, a key driver of cartilage breakdown and ongoing joint inflammation. By interrupting this inflammatory cycle, IRAP helps reduce pain and slow progression of joint disease while supporting overall joint function.

Pro-Stride (APS therapy)
Pro-Stride is an autologous protein solution derived from the horse’s own blood, designed to concentrate anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors. It works by helping rebalance the joint environment—reducing inflammation while supporting cartilage health and joint function. Pro-Stride is prepared stall-side and provides a practical option for managing osteoarthritis and maintaining performance in active horses.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
PRP is an autologous therapy created by concentrating platelets from the horse’s own blood and injecting them into injured tissue or joints. These platelets release growth factors and bioactive proteins that help regulate inflammation, clear damaged tissue, and stimulate healing. PRP is commonly used for soft tissue injuries, and can be prepared stall-side for immediate use.

Renovo
Renovo is a cryopreserved equine amniotic allograft derived from amnion and amniotic fluid, used to support and protect injured tissues. It contains naturally occurring growth factors, cytokines, and extracellular matrix components that help regulate inflammation and promote tissue healing. As it’s a ready-to-use allograft, it provides a consistent, biologically active option without the variability or processing required with autologous therapies.

Alpha2EQ
Alpha2EQ is an autologous protein therapy derived from the horse’s own blood, designed to concentrate anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory proteins. It helps regulate the inflammatory environment within joints while supporting normal tissue function and recovery. In addition to joint use, Alpha2EQ has also been investigated in airway and ocular applications, reflecting its broader anti-inflammatory potential.

Shockwave therapy
Shockwave uses high-energy acoustic pressure waves to stimulate healing and reduce pain in injured tissues. It promotes increased blood flow, cellular activity, and metabolic response within the targeted area, supporting repair of both soft tissue and bone. Shockwave is commonly used for tendon and ligament injuries, suspensory disease, and select bony conditions as part of a comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation plan.

Chemical arthrodesis (alcohol fusion of the hocks)
This procedure is used to fuse low-motion joints in the hock to eliminate chronic pain. It is a cost-effective option for managing advanced hock arthritis in performance horses.

PAAG (Polyacrylamide Gel) therapies – Arthramid® Vet & Noltrex® Vet
PAAG products are long-acting intra-articular treatments used to support joint function in horses with osteoarthritis. They work by improving joint lubrication and reducing friction within the synovial environment, helping to improve comfort and mobility over time.
Arthramid® Vet integrates with the synovial lining to provide longer-term structural support, while Noltrex® Vet acts as a space-filling gel that helps cushion the joint and improve mechanics. Both are used in selected cases where longer-lasting joint support is the treatment goal.

Annual wellness examinations
Routine exams provide an opportunity to assess overall health and detect issues early. Preventative care is tailored to each horse’s lifestyle.

Vaccination programs
Vaccination protocols are designed based on risk, location, and use. Core and risk-based vaccines are administered appropriately.

Diagnostic Imaging

Digital radiography (X-rays)

Musculoskeletal and soft tissue ultrasonography
Ultrasound is used to evaluate tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissue structures. It is also valuable for monitoring healing and guiding rehabilitation.

Upper airway endoscopy
Endoscopy allows visualization of the upper respiratory tract. This is particularly useful in horses with poor performance, abnormal noise, or suspected airway dysfunction. This can be also useful in Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH) with 1-2 hours post exercise.

Baseline and comparative performance imaging
Baseline imaging provides a reference point for future comparisons. This is especially valuable in performance horses to track changes over time.

Mare breeding management

Pre-purchase exams are performed as a risk assessment to evaluate a horse’s current soundness and suitability for its intended use. Rather than a pass or fail, the focus is on identifying existing issues and potential risk factors that may impact future performance. Findings are interpreted in the context of the horse’s age, discipline, and workload to support informed purchasing decisions.

Digital radiography add on
Radiography Imaging can be included to assess areas of concern or high-risk regions based off initial pre purchase exam. Add ons are customized based on the horse and buyer’s goals.

Ultrasound evaluation add on
Ultrasound Imaging can be included to assess areas of concern or high-risk regions based off initial pre purchase exam. Add ons are customized based on the horse and buyer’s goals.

Drug screening coordination
Drug testing can be arranged when requested. Samples are collected and submitted according to appropriate protocols.

Internal Medicine

Poor Performance Evaluations
We investigate horses that are not performing as expected when there is no obvious lameness. This may include exercise intolerance, poor recovery after work, inconsistent performance, weight loss, behavioural changes under saddle, or signs consistent with gastric ulcers. Workups are tailored to the individual case and may involve multiple body systems to identify the underlying cause.

Respiratory Disease Diagnosis & Management
Respiratory disease is a common cause of reduced performance in equine athletes. We commonly assess conditions such as inflammatory airway disease (equine asthma), exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), and upper airway obstruction. Management may include anti-inflammatories, environmental modifications, inhaled therapies, and performance management strategies depending on severity.

Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL)
BAL is used to sample the lower airways when deeper respiratory disease is suspected. It is particularly useful in diagnosing inflammatory airway disease (equine asthma) and assessing airway inflammation associated with exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). Results help guide targeted treatment and long-term management strategies.

Neurologic Examinations
Neurologic evaluations assess coordination, strength, balance, and spinal or peripheral nerve function. Common conditions investigated include cervical vertebral stenotic myelopathy (Wobbler syndrome), cervical osteoarthritis, equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), and other causes of ataxia or weakness. Findings guide further diagnostics and treatment options, which may include medical management, performance modification, or referral-level imaging.

Infectious Disease Investigation
Cases involving fever, lethargy, swelling, or unexplained illness may require investigation for infectious disease. This includes respiratory infections, bacterial or viral disease, and systemic inflammatory conditions. Diagnostics may involve bloodwork, culture, and field-based testing, with treatment focused on targeted therapy, supportive care, and appropriate biosecurity measures when indicated.

Gastric Ulcer Disease
Gastric ulcers are a common and often overlooked cause of poor performance and behavioural changes in horses. Clinical signs may include girthiness, resistance to work, poor appetite, weight loss, and inconsistent performance. Diagnosis is based on clinical presentation and response to therapy, with gastroscopy performed when indicated. Management typically involves acid suppression therapy and addressing contributing factors such as diet, workload, and stress.

General Internal Medicine Cases
This category includes a broad range of medical conditions that affect health and performance but don’t fit into a single system. Examples include weight loss, decreased appetite, chronic inflammation, skin disease, and unexplained changes in performance or attitude. Treatment is directed at the underlying cause and may involve medical therapy, management changes, or further diagnostics as needed.

Minor Procedures

Castration
Routine castrations are performed safely in the field with appropriate sedation and analgesia. Post-operative care instructions are provided to support recovery.

Laceration repair and wound management
Lacerations are assessed and repaired when appropriate. Ongoing wound management plans are provided to promote optimal healing.

Mass removal and cryotherapy
Select masses can be removed or treated. This ranges for lumps and bumps to sarcoids and other neoplasia.

Caslick’s procedure
Caslick’s procedures are performed to improve vulvar conformation and reduce contamination of the reproductive tract, supporting both fertility and reproductive efficiency. They may also be indicated in select cases where abnormal wind sucking or related performance concerns are present.

Umbilical hernia repair
Certain hernias can be repaired in the field depending on size and complexity. Cases are carefully selected to ensure appropriate management.

Enucleation
Eye removal may be performed in severe or non-salvageable cases. Pain management and aftercare are prioritized.

Emergency

Urgent and emergency care
Emergency services are available for acute medical and surgical conditions. Initial stabilization and treatment are provided in the field.

Colic evaluation and initial management
Colic cases are assessed promptly with a thorough examination. Treatment and referral decisions are made based on clinical findings.

Wound and laceration repair
Wounds are evaluated, cleaned, and repaired as appropriate. Proper management is essential to promote healing and minimize complications.

Abscess diagnosis and treatment
Abscesses are diagnosed and treated to relieve pain and resolve infection. Follow-up care is provided to ensure proper healing.

Field-based diagnostics and treatment
